Many FLOCers had no idea what Cystic Fibrosis was until Ex. Dir. Mike Shumard and his team of dedicated staff came to the Renaissance Club Sport in Aliso Viejo to share the amazing work of finding a cure for the debilitating lung disease.  FLOCers responded by assisting with a wine tasting event in November and helping to bring more awareness to the disease.  “Cycstic Fibrosis is an orphan disease.  That means there is no money that comes in from the government or drug companies.  This means it must come from you, from families, from supporters and people who encourage the research.  We know we can’t do this without you!” Mike Shumard, Executive Director, Cystic Fibrosis

Talk about an amazing organization!  FLOCers got to learn about the exciting work of Camp Footprints at Scott’s Restaurant in Costa Mesa in July.  A small group of dedicated volunteers commit an entire week of their summer to helping mentally and physically challenged kids have a mountain camp experience of a lifetime.  FLOCers responded by assisting the camp staff in the evenings by spending time with the kids and providing the staff a much needed break.  “We were all drawn to this simple mission that there is dignity for all human beings, including children with disabilities and from low income families.” Mike Nguyen, Camp Footprints

Sunsets was the bar of choice for FLOC’s September event with Court Appointed Special Advocates.  Kendra Puryear, CASA’s Communication Director addressed CASA’s roll in the community and their commitment to advocate for Orange Counties abused and neglected children.  During the month of August, FLOC members assisted CASA by helping to organize games and activities at one of its summer picnics.  FLOC members also assisted CASA at its holiday party in December.

Newport Beach’s Sutra Club hosted FLOC’s October event with Project Access.  New awareness was brought to FLOC members concerning the variety of services that are provided to low income families in Orange County.  Following the event, FLOC members adopted families for the holiday by contributing gifts.    “100% of the individuals that we surveyed last year said that they felt safer in their communities as a result of project access being there.” Sondra Contino, Director of Marketing, Project Access

FLOC partnered with the Emerging Professionals of the Irvine Chamber of Commerce for a laugh filled night at the Irvine IMPROV.  100 FLOCers/EPs attended the event which brought awareness to the nonprofit Families Forward.   Later the attendees were entertained by comedian Ian Bagg.  Following the event, FLOCers volunteered with Families Forward by delivering Thanksgiving meals to families in San Clemente, CA.   “Families Forward has worked really hard to provide a recession response to the south part of Orange County.  So many families have been effected…and people looking more like you than me are coming into our food pantry area all the time.” Margie Wakeham, Executive Director of Families Forward.

107 Gift Donated    $380 Raised for Charity

FLOCers celebrated the December holiday season with the annual Holiday Charity Crawl and Wrap party.  80 FLOCers attended the festivities which began at the Women’s Community of Laguna Beach and concluded downtown at Hennessey’s Tavern.  During the evening FLOC members learned about the nonprofit organization World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) from the local director Ryan Goldsmith.  After an organic dinner from La Sirena Grill, FLOCers embarked on a pub crawl involving 6 bars: Blue Laguna, Saloon, White House, Marine Room, Oceans Avenue and Hennessey’s Tavern.  At each bar dollars were raised by bar patrons pitching into the “FLOC Holiday Bucket.”

In total, $380 dollars were raised and 100 gifts were collected for needy families.  The gifts were later distributed to a Project Access sponsored community center in Santa Ana, CA.

FLOC members began 2011 by gathering at Villa Nova’s in Newport Beach to learn more about the Mental Health Association of Orange County.  FLOC member and MHA Board Member Wade Slome began the evening by sharing his on personal experience with the issue and encouraged others to get involved with the organization.  Sandy Cusmano, MHA’s Director of Development shared the MHA mission, vision and role in the community.  Darlene Powell ended the evening by sharing her experience of working for MHA and dealing personally with mental illness.

Two weeks later 35 FLOC members played a fun softball game with MHA clients from the group “What Ever It Takes” (WIT).  The game was followed by a nice BBQ in the park.

February 2011, interfaith Homeless Outreach Project for Empowerment (iHOPE)

FLOC’s February awareness event took place at the Blue Danube in San Clemente.  Jowan Mothershead and Lona Flore shared iHOPE’s mission, vision and role in helping and serving the homeless living near Capo Beach.  Following the talk, FLOC members signed up to serve the homeless over the next coming Saturdays through iHOPE’s shower services and homeless resource distribution.

FLOC partnered with the Young Professional Committee of Big Brothers Big Sisters for a super fun March Mardi Gras party.  Over 100 people walked through the door wearing bight masks and colorful outfits.  Jamie Grant, Joshua Flatt and Matt D’Abusco shared their passion for the organization and the need for new volunteers/mentors.  The event raised $1100 for BBBS and helped fund a “Big Day” at boomers with 25 volunteers and 25 children/teens!

April’s FLOC event took place at the Regatta Cafe and Lido Theater in Newport Beach.  Boys Hope Girls Hope Executive Director Robin Sinclair shared her passion for the organization and the work they do to impact the lives of at risk youth.  Following the meeting, FLOCers piled into Lido Theater to watch the inspirational movie “Soul Surfer.”  To say the least, it was a major tear jerker.  FLOC raised $850 for BHGH at the event which will go towards a backyard refurbish, bench and dinner party with members of BHGH and FLOCers.

“We provide hope in the form of residential, stable, loving environments for “stars,” teens with tremendous potential.  We provide the opportunity of an incredible education and our goal is to get these kids to college and to break the cycle of poverty for their families.” Robin Sinclair Boys Hope Girls Hope Executive Director

This month it is a pleasure to highlight FLOC Member Robert Kollar.  He has been with FLOC from almost its inception and has had an untold amount of influence upon the organization.  As an attorney, a judge, a CrossFit king, a scuba diving wizard, and a networker extraordinaire, there are simply no boundaries to his capacity to lead and to make a positive impact in the community.  Attending more volunteer events than awareness events, Robert embraces FLOC’s mission/vision and truly lives the concept of giving back.  Above all, Robert’s influence of bringing FLOC’s work to like-minded friends and businesses such as Kawasaki has and will continue to have a major impact as to the longevity and sustainability of FLOC.

This past Sunday, May 1st,  30 FLOC members (and another 7000+ people) put on their running shoes and took to the streets of Irvine to complete 13.1 solid miles in an effort to raise funds and bring awareness to the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation.  The race started at 7am and by  9:30am every FLOCer was in the VIP booth celebrating their completion of the race!  A special congratulation goes to PCRF Race Director and FLOC Member Jordan Cross for orchestrating the entire event.  You are truly a leader amongst leaders!

While you were celebrating the start of the New Year this past January, Gavin, age 5, and his parents were at the hospital.  He had a horrible Christmas due to terrible pain from “apparent infections” in both ears.  The infections had been steady for months.  ”Too frequent,” thought Mom.  Tests were ordered — CT scans, x-rays, blood work.  As it turned out, three-fourths of his bone marrow was composed of leukemia cells.  Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).

Gavin kicked off the first two days of January with two surgeries.  They would be followed by four phases of chemotherapy and a “maintenance” plan that will last until 2013.

“As absurd as it sounds, Gavin hit the cancer lottery,” says Mom.  ”He has the most curable type of pediatric cancer.  His chromosomes are the most receptive to chemotherapy.  He is in the best age group for responsiveness to the treatment protocol that has been developed and fine-tuned for ALL through decades of research and study.  He has been through so much for a five year old kid, but there are so many kids that have been and are going through far more difficult and less certain treatments.  No one deserves cancer, but a child having cancer seems an especially brutal reality.  We are devoted and determined to help other children who receive a cancer diagnosis have a treatment protocol that will result in remission and cure.  PCRF is striving to do just that.”

“We are so thankful for Gavin’s entrance into maintenance, and while we still have a long road ahead, we are grateful that he is handling everything well, returning to his normal self, and has gotten used to the medications he takes everyday as just another part of daily life.”

Over 120 people attended the Boys Hope Girls Hope, Soul Surfer movie premier/wine tasting event this past Friday (video photos)!  The event took place at the Regatta Cafe Restaurant in Newport Beach followed by the surf movie at Lido Theatre.  Huge thank you to Robin Sinclair who shared the Boys Hope Girls Hope vision/mission, the Fritz Duda Company for providing the space and everyone else who came to supported the awareness event!   ~ The movie, like the evening’s featured nonprofit, also proved to be incredibly inspirational and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.   Bethany Hamilton attested to us all that disasters/disabilities are never an excuse to let go of our passions and dreams.  Thank you for your inspiration Bethany!

A new idea geared to impact Orange County’s hungry is coming next week (April 19) to the Alley Restaurant and Bar!  The Fair Share Project, created by the local young professional Jenn Long is a community effort to feed the hungry by sharing what we have (watch video).
By attending one of the Fair Share nights at participating restaurant sponsors, you will have the option to receive a smaller portion of your meal, and a percentage of the price you pay will be donated to feed the bellies in our community that normally go without.  In essence the Fair Share menu provides smaller, balanced dinner portions, reducing food waste in restaurants and 65% of your meal cost will go directly to feed those in our community. Your meal alone will provide 60 meals for those in need in our local county!  All proceeds go directly to the Second Harvest Food Bank of OC.  ~ Come to the event and check out more details here!

Besides volunteering and attending networking events, Brett’s “day job” involves working with individual investors to explore whether an investment in healthcare real-estate is suitable for their investment portfolio.  He does this as an Associate with Cornerstone Real Estate Funds.  Brett can also be found in the gym hitting the weights, running triathlons and jumping out of airplanes!

The second annual Kelpfest event is coming! Join us Saturday, April the 16th for a fun filled day of activities and educational displays as we celebrate the return of the giant kelp forests off the coast of Laguna Beach.

Kelpfest 2011 will be held at Laguna Beach’s Main Beach and will feature great attractions such as:

KelpFest 2011: Celebrate Giant Kelp!

Giant kelp forests are one of the most productive ecosystems on earth.  With more than 800 species relying on them, kelp forests are referred to as the rainforests of the sea.  More than 20 years ago the kelp forests of Orange County disappeared due primarily to overfishing and pollution.  In 2002 marine biologist  Nancy Caruso of Get Inspired! started a project which would eventually restore this once lush forests.  In 2002 with what came to be 5000 volunteers, Caruso and her volunteers began restoring the kelp forests in Newport and Laguna Beach.  By 2010, the kelp had reached historic densities and the animals were starting to return to the area.

In celebration of this event, KelpFest was created to celebrate the return of the kelp forests and to honor the thousands of people who helped to restore them.  The 2^nd annual KelpFest,  will be on April 16^th, 2011 this year on Main Beach in Laguna Beach from 9am-5pm.  There will be many like-minded environmental organizations with exhibits at the event to help educate the participants and help to nurture an appreciation for giant kelp forests.  Other activities throughout the day include live painting and sculpting, an life     size interactive kelp forest model, a live underwater broadcast from the kelp forest, a live performance from Birdsong and the Eco Wonders, guided tidepool tours, free stand up paddle board tours to the kelp forest, and a 100 snorkeler swim to the kelp forest, as well as lots of arts and crafts for kids.  If you can’t make it to the event, you can still view the first of its kind underwater broadcast from the kelp by streaming it from UStream on your computer or smartphone.

There are two ways you will be able to view the broadcast:

4) You must have performed as a professional cheerleader with the National Championship Team, traveled internationally representing the USA and crafted choreography for the San Francisco 49rs as well as the UCLA half time shows.

5) You must have 8 years of professional experience in home mortgages and continue to work in the field while at the same time juggle studies for a degree in Human Services.

6) You must have a beautiful nine year old daughter, take her on exciting trips around the country, attend her softball/soccer games on a regular basis, educate her on the virtue of community service and volunteer together.

7) You must dearly love your friends and family, enjoy spending oodles of time with them and bring joy to their lives through endless positive energy, a constant smile, great humor and inspiring thoughts.

8 ) You must desire the outdoors, take pleasure in water skiing, enjoy sunbathing at the beach, go BIG on the snowboard and plan camping trips to far away destinations.

How did you hear about FLOC and why did you become a member?

My friend and FLOCer, Jake Kucheck, invited me to a FLOC event featuring Camp Footprints at Scott’s Seafood in Spring 2010. After meeting a few people and getting a feel for what the organization was about (building a sense of community by connecting people to charitable volunteer opportunities in their community) I realized I had found a group that was consistent with my view towards giving back – donating money is fine but the real impact comes from getting out there and touching the lives of people directly. I volunteered for Camp Footprints and convinced a few others to join me. It was a great experience and a fantastic way to be introduced to what FLOC had to offer.

What do you enjoy most about being a member of FLOC?

Two things: 1) The people. I immediately felt like part of the FLOC family and quickly become close friends with many FLOCers. 2) The endless opportunities to give back, learn about so many new good causes, and the ability to share my love of giving back to causes I already supported (PCRF and Big Brothers Big Sisters) with like-minded individuals. I guess that’s more than two things but who’s counting?

Tell us about The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) “Man of the Year” campaign?

LLS has a 10-week fundraising campaign in which 5-10 men and 5-10 women compete for the title of Man or Woman of the Year. The title is bestowed upon the Man and Woman that raise the most funds for LLS during the campaign. I’m not sure I agree with just one title as it takes a team of committed and dedicated people to pull off all the events we have planned. The team we put together for the campaign has been fantastic.

Who nominated you and why did you say yes?

Janet Hamada, a FLOCer, is an avid supporter of many charities and is deeply involved with LLS. The campaign has been the ultimate opportunity to give back. How can you say no to the opportunity to raise funds for a great cause, meet new people, and put on a bunch of fun events? It was an easy “yes”. Plus, saying “no” is boring…

They already have been supporting me! Here are some things everybody can do…

Why is becoming “Man of the Year” important to you?

Becoming Man of the Year really isn’t that important to me. Sure, winning the campaign and becoming Man of the Year would be a nice and a testament to all the hard work by all of us on the team but that is a distant second to how much fun we’ve had so far and the amount of money we’ll be able to raise to help find a cure for blood cancers.

This month FLOC members had an opportunity to listen to Jamie share her story and her passion of working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of OC.  She spoke from her heart about the joy of being a “BIG” for Perla and why she believes other professionals should become mentors for at risk children.  – “There is a huge need right now!  We have 200 kids on our waiting list.  We need mentors and we need you guys!”

Although Jamie’s primary focus is with BBBS, she sees the value in being a member of FLOC and greatly desires to be engaged with other nonprofits that are making a difference in Orange County.  Her hope is to volunteer for other organizations this year and to give back as best she can!

FLOC is thrilled to have Jamie as a member and is inspired by her passion and commitment to serving others in need.  The members of FLOC look forward to working with Jamie and BBBS for a long time to come!

We are setting up a FLOC team and already have 20 people that have committed to joining us. Our goal is to get as many FLOCers, friends and family members out there as possible! All proceeds benefit the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF) and Future Leaders of Our Community.

CASA will begin holding meetings from now until the event in June at the CASA training room across from their office. .   Following the initial meeting, there will be one meeting per month until the event gets a little closer and then they will meet more often to discuss details, wrap auction items and set-up.

Involvement on the committee would include:

• Attending monthly meetings and contributing ideas for planning
• Procuring auction items from local businesses, restaurants etc. and if possible also asking for sponsorship of the event
• Inviting friends, colleagues, family to attend the event and/or join the committee

Each spring, the luncheon and fashion show fundraiser is held at the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel to raise money for Mission Women’s Wellness Center, Mission Maternity Center and Nursing Center of Excellence for nursing scholarships.

Well, most of us aren’t there yet.  We’re still fighting the good fight and doing what we can to make a difference, to do something and to be somebody.  So for a lot of us, that’s where FLOC comes in.  I’m not saying it’s a panacea and that every answer to one’s social downfalls can be met through its enchanted door, but one would have to admit it’s a pretty darn good vehicle.   Let me explain…  If you want to meet the mayors of local cities, state and federal congressmen, business leaders, nonprofit Executive Directors and dine in some of the trendiest locations in the OC, than FLOC will get you there.  If you want to network with the Emerging Professionals, OC Elite, Newport Jaycees ,young ProfessionalCommittee of Big Brothers Big Sisters, GenNext or the Young Professionals World Affairs Council of Orange County, FLOC too will deliver.  If you desire endless invitations to nonprofit galas where you can be seen amongst some of the top inspiring philanthropist in the state, than FLOC is your ticket.  If you love the “night life” and want to be included in party after party after party until there is absolutely no more room on your calendar, well than look no further.  Did Imention volunteering??  Let’s just say endless!  New friends, new contacts, new relationships, new life if you so desire.  Honestly, I’m not kidding.  By the way, it grows exponentially.  Completely exhausting:) Jump on board!

Below are the steps FLOC took to seal-the-deal:

Oct. 2009 – FLOC holds a team meeting to determine whether or not to become a nonprofit.  FLOC Team votes YES!  FLOC begins researching the nonprofit process.

Nov. 2009 – FLOC makes the conclusion that it lacks the finances to hire an attorney (around $3500) and applies for legal assistance through the Public Law Center of Orange County.

Jan. 2010 – The Public Law Center of Orange County approves FLOC’s application for legal assistance and assigns Aref Afsari from the legal office of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP.

Feb. 2010 – FLOC sits down with Attorney Aref Afsari in Irvine to discuss FLOC’s nonprofit eligibility status and to draw out a course of action.

March 2010 – FLOC applies for a Fictitious Business Name through the Orange County Clerks office in Laguna Hills. “Future Leaders of Our Community” is chosen and accepted!  On the same day, FLOC opens a business checking account.  FLOC then publicizes the Fictitious Business Name (which is legally required) in the Mission Viejo News.

April-June 2010 – FLOC’s Board of Directors bylaws are written, mission/vision is finalized and paperwork completed.

July 2010 – Paper work is sent off to the State of California for name approval.

September 2010 – State of California approves the name and the final signed documents are sent to the IRS. Then we wait.

October 2010 – The IRS approves FLOC’s nonprofit status on Oct. 21!!  FLOC is issued a nonprofit tax ID number: 27-3460415

November 2010 – FLOC changes it’s banking business account to a non-profit account.

Now given it could have been done faster if we had the money, but we didn’t.  We also wanted the paper work to be done correctly the first time around and we simply didn’t have the expertise or the time to do it ourselves.  But those are the decisions you have to make when starting from scratch.

It was 5:30 in the morning when I heard the buzz.  The daylight was still pending and I was quite content in bed as I rolled over to glance at my phone.   “GET UP!” was all that the text said.  I wanted to write back “I hate you!,” but I didn’t and before I knew it I was up, board shorts on and standing at the curb.  Through the morning fog appeared a sleek, silent Ford Escape Hybrid.  Behind the glass was the smirking redhead Jordan Cross.  He gave me the nod and then within seconds my board was loaded and we were off…

Maybe you have to be a surfer to understand it, but there is something quite bonding about getting into the cold water at the crack of dawn with another human being.  It’s torture, but the pain doesn’t feel as bad when someone else is doing it with you.  Somehow for Jordan and I these early morning surf sessions had become a daily ritual and although the waves were often hit and miss, the conversation was always on par.  Over an hour surf session you can cover a range of topics and without fail our banter took us through the latest dating stories, updates about family and friends, Ali’s hopes of finding a husband on the Bachelorette, and of course the upcoming events involving PCRF and FLOC.  It was this final topic in which we had held the most common ground and it was primarily because of PCRF and FLOC that our friendship came to be.

For 15 years Jordan’s family has been involved with the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF), and over the years Jordan has played a number of roles assisting in its growth.  In the summer of 2009, Jordan stepped up to help PCRF reach a younger demographic and get new people involved.  It was at that time that Jordan heard about FLOC and its mission/vision to help young professionals connect with non-profits in the community.  Jordan liked the idea and within a month we were shaking hands at the Wind and Sea in Dana Point.

My first impression of Jordan was a very likeable, easy going, cool guy with a bright smile.  I later came to know him as a type A, driven, let’s get things done, (D on the DiSC) work horse.  All great qualities for a man who has become the Chairperson of the PCRF 2011 10k run, 5k run/walk, 1K Kids’ Fun Run and Bike Tour (which FLOC will participate in this Spring 2011 ).  — From the beginning of our acquaintance Jordan pushed to have an awareness event with PCRF and FLOC.  We eventually settled on having a wine tasting affair at the La Maison Gourmet in Mission Viejo, January 2010.  Jordan and Troy Varenchik (PCRF co-worker) spoke at the event and gave a moving speech about the organization’s work to help find a cure to children’s cancer.  FLOC responded by participating in the 2010 5k/10k Run, contributing to the PCRF Associate Advisory Board and bringing ongoing awareness to PCRF’s events.  (See this e-newsletter for info on PCRF’s” Bid for the Kid.”)

The new partnership between PCRF and FLOC was and is exciting, and it is the direct result of Jordan’s leadership and commitment to bringing awareness to a cause that he is passionate about.  But beyond PCRF and FLOC, Jordan grasps the concept that a healthy community is a connected community and that we (as a community) should take responsibility and participate in helping to solve our pending issues.  In this regard, Jordan is clearly a current and Future Leader of Our Community.

A couple of months ago Jordan became a FLOC Professional Member.  He says he did it because since moving back to Orange County it’s been one of a few organizations in which he has found a true sense of fellowship and in which he’s developed some quality friendships.  I’m certainly glad he feels that way as it’s also the feeling that we have towards him and it’s one of the tenants that we are trying to foster within FLOC’s organization.

Although I’m not always excited about getting up at the crack of dawn to surf cold water, I do enjoy the opportunity to spend time with a man of good character, virtues, discipline and passion.   It is inspiring and it gives me hope for my own work and our society.  Jordan walks the talk and I am privileged to call him a friend.  I am looking forward to the many more early sessions to come and continued conversations as to how FLOC can contribute to the courageous work of PCRF.

iHOPE conducted its first Volunteer Training for our Mobile Shower Service. We had a wonderful group of enthusiastic volunteers. Since we had a very full agenda, we neglected to mention our urgent need for volunteers to drive our rented truck that will pull the shower trailer. This person should have towing experience – even if it is just a camper. The only tricky part is backing the trailer into the lot behind our iHOPE office where it is stored. If we had 4 drivers, each volunteer would only have to drive once per month.

If you know anyone who regularly tows boats, campers, horse trailers, etc. and they would like to give some time to helping the homeless, please let me know. They may contact me by email or the phone number listed below. Also, if you have an questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

On average, it takes about $1,150 per youth per year, Littlejohn said.

“Considering the alternative of keeping a young adult in jail for the same period –anywhere from $25,000 to $75,000 per year – $1,100 seems like a reasonable investment,” he said.

The Clubs are a proven delinquency prevention program and one of the best bargains in America. The BGCCV also boasts a 100 percent graduation rate for students who stay with the program.

For more than 18 years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley has been at the forefront of youth development in South Orange County, including Aliso Viejo, Capistrano Beach, Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, San Clemente, and San Juan Capistrano. • Charter buses will depart LA/OC/SD and the cost is $40 per person and includes transportation, lunch, craft project, an orphanage, and lots of kids. We will select a bus so your group can all be together. If you can fill a bus of 50 people, even better!
• We ask each volunteer to donate or raise at least $100 so we can feed the kids after our visit. We need to raise $75,000 this year to help us continue our work in Baja. We will provide a donation page soon so please check back.
